He gave the door a final nudge with his shoulder to prise it open, the old wooden frame was swollen by the damp weather and constant steam emanating from the drain off the sidewalk right outside of the flea pit where he lived. Before he slumped into bed he looked out the window to take in the view. Dark streets lined with decrepit buildings. At the far end of the road two men were beating the hell out of a guy. In the distance a police siren wailed. But they were not coming to the aid of this man. Looking back down, the two thugs had gone but the victim’s body remained, lifeless and bloody…

Summer 2022

The summer issue of The Sirens Call Zine is always a fun one!

For the fifty-eighth issue of The Sirens Call, we’re looking for horrifying and well-constructed tales of horror and dark fiction. This issue also has a sub-theme of summer disasters. That can mean vacations from hell – in the literal sense, summer creatures run amok, or even climate-oriented horror. That’s up to you, we just want a well constructed piece of prose that will wow us, or make us cringe!

We’ll be accepting short stories, flash fiction, drabbles, and poetry that fit within the horror/dark fiction genre. We welcome reprints as long as you hold the copyright to the piece.

Your piece can be scary, sullen, emotive, freaky, elegant, bizarre, have a dark satirical edge to it, or burn hotter than the sun!

The basic rules:

  • Write the piece well.
  • It must be primarily horror/dark…
