Lilian
by Stacey Turner

Lilian sighed and drained the rest of the red wine from the glass. The bottle had fallen over and the last swig had emptied onto the table top, resulting in a sticky puddle. Endings were always messy it seemed, no matter how hopeful the start. She remembered meeting Matt, bumping into him on the subway, his offer to carry her guitar case, buy her coffee, lend her his couch. But she’d never slept on the couch, of course. She always moved too fast. Like the others, he’d called her his angel and placed her on a pedestal. She’d asked him not to, the inevitable fall from grace always left a lasting bruise. Not a bluing physical mark, but a weeping stain upon the soul. She tried so hard to stay atop, to be what he thought he wanted. At first, he’d seen her as…

Offspring
by Suzie Lockhart

Sunlight glistened off the water as I reclined on the dock, feeling thankful to be alive as I watched my grandchildren letting out whoops of joy. My son-in-law was in his speedboat, pulling them from behind in inner tubes.
It was the happiest I’d felt since my partner, Donald had died suddenly last year from a massive stroke.
My cell phone vibrated in my pocket.
I recognized the number instantly, and contemplated not answering.
 “Abe speaking.”
“Hello, Abraham.” Cassandra Moxie’s cool voice came across the line. “I’m afraid this isn’t a personal call.”
“I’m retired, remember,” I stated flatly, waving at my grandkids. “Surely you have an agent that can handle whatever is going on.”
“Not this time, Abraham. Not many agents remember what it was like to work for the FBI when things started, 35 years ago.”
Unfortunately, Moxie had my attention.

Frontier(s)
Leading Lady: Karina Testa

brianmoreland_frontiers_mp

Synopsis:

A gang of young thieves flee Paris during the violent aftermath of a political election, only to hole up at an Inn run by neo-Nazis.

Brian’s opinion:

“The French horror movie Frontiers started out with a group of thieves escaping Paris during a riot and taking refuge at a bed and breakfast. The hapless gang quickly discovers that Nazi cannibals live at the inn. Yasmine (Karina Testa), a thin girl who’s newly pregnant, goes through a complete transformation as she’s terrorized by the cannibals who want to turn her into their Aryan…

Synopsis:

A vampire named Saya, who is part of covert government agency that hunts and destroys demons in a post-WWII Japan, is inserted in a military school to discover which one of her classmates is a demon in disguise.

Mark’s opinion:

“This live action film based on the anime is about Saya (played by Jun Ji-hyun) who works for the U.S. Government hunting creatures called chiropterans. It is implied that Saya is a vampire, although never outright said. The setting is an air force base in the mid-‘60s on Halloween…

Yŭka Io
by H.R. Boldwood

She is Yŭka Io, guardian of the abyss, who rises before the blazing sun of Tyber stirs the electric sky.
War hammer in hand, she begins her trek across the parched clay soil, feeling it crack underfoot, hearing the brittle ‘snap’ beneath her feet. The sound reminds her of breaking china — the china her mother used before the orbital tilt of Tyber replaced elegance and civility with misery and death.
She does not walk alone. Her feathered legion, dark and fearless, soars through the forever storm, riding the lightning and climbing the currents at her beck and call. Ever vigilant, their eyes scan the void for the heinous monsters loosed by the ever-widening fissure.
Together, Yŭka Io and her winged warriors hold the beasts of the chasm at bay — dark, demonic leviathans that lay in wait, sheltering in the abyss. …

Day 07 – Dan Dillard:

The Descent
Leading Lady: Natalie Mendoza

dandillard_thedescent_mp

Synopsis:

A caving expedition goes horribly wrong, as the explorers become trapped and ultimately pursued by a strange breed of predators.

Dan’s opinion:

“My favorite ensemble cast (maybe ever) in a horror film belongs to Neil Marshall’s The Descent. It’s loaded with strong women and I don’t have a complaint about any of them. The setup is simple and the payoff is huge if you’re willing to buy it and I think most people are. The reason you’re willing to buy it is the writing and the performances given by the cast…

Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Leading Lady: Gaylen Ross

Synopsis:

Following an ever-growing epidemic of zombies that have risen from the dead, two Philadelphia S.W.A.T. team members, a traffic reporter, and his television executive girlfriend seek refuge in a secluded shopping mall.

Jon’s opinion:

“This movie came out before I was even born but after I watched the original Night of the Living Dead, I had high expectations that this film would be bigger, badder and better. To my enjoyment, it was with a lot more blood, gore and zombies. The more I watched it though, the more…

End of the Line
by Lisa Lane

She had known this night would come. It had only been a matter of time. The adversary had been relentless, ever reminding her that the hunter was also the hunted. The witch’s charm had staved him off, but his magic had proven more powerful. She’d let down her guard, let herself love. How could she know he’d go so far to ensure her end? That a man could toy so cruelly with her emotions… that a man might poison himself before he gave himself to her, sacrifice himself to destroy this perceived evil?
She died alone.
